Current projects for Richmond Research and Recovery include the donation of a brand new Bounty Hunter metal detector to the boy scouts of Staten Island on June 16th at their general meeting at the Berlin Lodge at Pouch camp. My plan is to teach the scouts the fundamentals and code of ethics of metal detecting with the help of Staten Island History Hunters metal detecting club. I will be asking the club for volunteers on Saturdays to help with this project. My other current project is the cleaning and conserving of a flintlock pistol and saber from the 1700’s which was found at a current detecting site on the south shore of Staten Island.
I made a visit to the Discover Sea museum in Fenwick Island Delaware and with the help of Dale Clifton, a treasure hunter turned archeologist and curator of the museum. I am taking the proper steps in the conservation process. My goal when completed is to donate the artifacts to the Staten Island museum.
New sites are being researched all the time. I will be heading back to Saint Edwards camp to detect the second half of the property, and am currently detecting two home sites from 1860 and 1893. I also detect the city beaches within the boundaries of the parks department permit. Recently, a 1922 peace dollar and two silver dimes were found at a depth of 8 inches on one of their beaches. As new artifacts are recovered they will be reported on this website.
Lastly, I met with a representative of the parks department about the problems arising on the city property by people who detect and do not stay inside the boundaries mandated by the parks department about leaving open holes in the areas. If you are detecting these sites or anywhere else please follow the rules and also leave no trace. This is how I get welcomed back to all my sites. Believe me it works! Check back for updates.
Thank You
Fred DeLise
